Developing your PR business

Some people enjoy the 9 to 5 job, but others prefer to be their own boss. I, myself, don’t mind having a 9 to 5 job because I like the routine and I don’t have to add too much self-control. Being your own boss does, however, have its perks, according to Ed Zitron’s This Is How You Pitch.

If you are one of those people that are interested in being your own boss in the PR world, here are 5 areas you should focus on if you want to develop your PR business:

Zitron suggests that you:

1. Get Online - Get yourself out there by creating a simple website with your work, what you'll provide for your cl
ient and how you'll work with them.

2. Make Cold Calls - Start calling companies and set up meetings to "sell" your business. Research their business and tell them how you can help them to improve/be better. They may not hire you but now they'll know you and possibly refer you to others.

3. Start Small - Start small by helping out small/local companies who need PR for specific events campaigns. This can help add to your portfolio and show companies that you have experience. Even offering your skills for free can help you so you'll gain the experience and more content for your portfolio.

4. Get on Social Media - Almost everyone is on social media. Take advantage of it and create your PR social media channels. Share your thoughts and ways you can help people, in a professional/appropriate manner. You can reach many people and others can know of you because of word of mouth. Due to your content on social media, people can gain trust of who you are and what you do and then trust you with their reputations.

5. Read - Reading is very important in the PR world. You never stop learning. It's important to gain knowledge in many areas since this can be a real competitive advantage in the business when networking.

I hope this outline helps you in your PR business.

Xo,
Stacy.
